On 22nd March 2021 a raging fire ripped through the Balukhali Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya, Bangladesh.

Rohingya refugees need immediate attention and here is why

The total number of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar is around 869,000 individuals. The Rohingya refugee population is concentrated in extremely congested camps within Ukhyia and Teknaf Upazilas of Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh.

The refugees living in the camps are dependent on the assistance provided by the humanitarian community and government of Bangladesh.

On 22nd March 2021, a fire swept through the Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya. An estimated 900+ shelters (around 7,500+ individuals) are reported to have been affected. The fire has sadly added to the woes and miseries of the Rohingya families.

This is the third fire in recent months: the first on 12th May 2020 which impacted 350 households and the second on 14th January 2021 which affected 700+ households.

Global Muslim Charitable Organization has been supporting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh since 2017. To date, we have built 345 shelters for refugee families, a child-friendly centre and 65 toilets and shower rooms. We have distributed 556 food packs, 860 winter packs, 321 household kits and Cash Amount. We have built three large water reservoir systems, dug 28 deep water wells and provided 2 ambulances. Muslim Charity works through locally registered partner organizations and any work done on the ground for the Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar is first approved by the NGO Bureau of the Prime Minister’s Office in Bangladesh and then approved by the Camp Management.

We have also been running a Child Friendly Space in the Hakim Para Camp, helping to support their psychological and physical wellbeing.
